Rebate on property tax likely to be extended by a month

Bengaluru, April 25: If all goes well, property owners may get good news soon. The state government may extend rebate period for payment of property tax until May 31 in BBMP jurisdiction.  The rebate period ends on April 30.

Speaking to Bengaluru Express, Deepak RL, Special Commissioner (Revenue) said that a proposal would be sent through the BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath to Urban Development seeking the permission for extension of rebate period to benefit property owners to claim the rebate for another month.

“However, as of now it has not been decided. For now, April 30 is the last day to avail 5 per cent rebate of full payment of property tax. He urged the property owners to pay the tax at the earliest to avail the benefit,” he added.

Asked whether code of conduct would come in the way of extension of rebate period, Deepak clarified that the move to extend the rebate period would not affect or help one particular party or individual. The move helps property owners across the BBMP jurisdiction. Nevertheless, permission has to be sought from the election commission, he added. The BBMP has made a collection of Rs. 624 crore as on Tuesday noon. Last year, the BBMP has mopped up over Rs. 1,000 crore for the corresponding period. Since the tax payment is made through online, the election process has not directly affected the collection. However, some people need assistance from the revenue staff, who are busy on poll duty, he explained.
