Bangalore, April 7: SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar has successfully performed Karnataka’s first & second Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation using the HeartMate 3 device – a third- generation device employing Full MagLev Flow Technology on a 69-Year-old local patient and demonstrated its leadership in advanced cardiac care.
The complex and rare cardiac surgery was led by Dr. Ashwin, CTVS & Transplant Surgeon, and his multidisciplinary team, making SPARSH the only hospital in the state to have performed such transplants.
This milestone reinforces SPARSH RR Nagar as a Centre of Excellence in Heart Failure and Transplant Surgery, especially for the local population, who now have access to world-class cardiac interventions without needing to travel outside the state.
The second transplant was carried out in March 2025, and the patient a resident of Bangalore was successfully discharged in the second week of April. Just a month before, SPARSH Hospital RR Nagar had successfully performed its first artificial heart transplant on a patient from Bagalkot, who now leads a healthy and active life post-surgery.
The HeartMate 3 LVAD is a Left Ventricular Assist Device (not a full heart replacement), so it’s an “artificial heart transplant.” It’s commonly used as a bridge-to-transplant (patient awaits a donor heart), or as a permanent solution for those unsuitable for a donor heart.
“Performing successful artificial heart transplant in Karnataka is not just a medical achievement but a beacon of hope for patients with end-stage heart failure. The HeartMate 3 LVAD that we used offers revolutionary MagLev™️ Flow Technology, which drastically improves patient outcomes and longevity,” said Dr. Ashwin, CTVS & Transplant Surgeon, SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar.
According to Dr.Vikranth Veerana, Sr. Consultant, Cardiology – “These devices bridge the gap for patients awaiting heart transplants and, in many cases, serve as long-term solutions,” added
HeartMate 3 LVAD is a cutting-edge device that uses advanced technology to improve heart function. It offers hope to patients with severe cardiac conditions. It tech-enabled device supports the heart’s pumping function in patients with advanced heart failure. Unlike traditional mechanical pumps, it uses magnetic levitation to minimize friction and wear, ensuring durability and reducing complications.
Such advanced artificial heart transplants are still rare in India. This year in January, Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantt claimed that it has performed India’s first-ever Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation using the HeartMate 3 device in a government institution.
Col Rahul Tewari, Cluster COO of SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar, added, “With this successful heart transplant SPARSH has been positioned among the very few hospitals in India capable of performing such advanced procedures. It reflects our long-standing commitment to deliver complex care with compassion, precision, and excellence. These transplants also highlight the confidence of our local patients in our expertise and infrastructure.”
The patient’s successful cardiac surgery and recovery in SPARSH Hospital instills increases confidence in patients suffering with critical cardiac conditions.
“In a traumatic condition I was running out of time and hope. SPARSH gave me both back. Today, I walk with a new heart and a new life. We are very grateful to Dr.Ashiwn and his dedicated team for a life-saving surgery and compassionate care,” said, Patient Mr.Kalyan Setty
Heart failure, especially in its end stages, is a daunting condition. Patients often experience severe fatigue, breathlessness, and fluid retention, leading to a significantly reduced quality of life. For these individuals, an LVAD offers a second chance at life, a chance to regain mobility, enjoy simple pleasures, and live longer while awaiting a donor heart.
With only a limited number of artificial heart transplants having been performed across India, SPARSH’s milestones firmly establish it as a pioneer in cardiac innovation and a lifeline for patients with complex heart conditions in Karnataka and beyond.
Dr.Madhusudan, Consultant – CTVS & Vascular Surgery, Dr.Shiva Prakash, Dr.Sunil Cristopher were present at the press meeting.
