National Workshop on Treated Wastewater Reuse to Begin in Bengaluru on November 6

Bengaluru, November 4:

A two-day national workshop on the reuse of treated wastewater will be held in Bengaluru on November 6 and 7, bringing together senior officials, policy experts, and industry leaders from across India to shape a national strategy for sustainable water reuse.

The workshop, convened by NITI Aayog in partnership with the Government of Karnataka and the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), will be inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

BWSSB Chairman Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar said the event aims to “develop a comprehensive national roadmap to make treated wastewater reuse an integral part of India’s water security strategy.”

Bengaluru is being showcased as a national model for circular water management, with 90 percent sewage treatment capacity of treated water reused for lake rejuvenation, urban landscaping, and industrial supply.

“Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Bengaluru has turned wastewater into an asset that strengthens the city’s sustainability and resilience,” Dr. Manohar said. “Treated wastewater is no longer waste—it’s a renewable resource that powers our ecology and economy.”

As part of the workshop, delegates will visit two flagship BWSSB projects — the Cubbon Park STP, which supplies tertiary-treated water to Vidhana Soudha and nearby government complexes, and the K.C. Valley STP, which channels treated water to replenish tanks and groundwater in Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts.

The field visits are expected to offer participants a first-hand look at Karnataka’s pioneering work in wastewater reuse — a model NITI Aayog hopes to replicate nationwide.
