Inmates in 16 prisons will learn simple techniques to enhance physical, mental & emotional health
Bengaluru, June 23: Isha Foundation in partnership with the Department of Prisons & Correctional Services, Government of Karnataka, launched the ‘Yogakshema’ program in the State. The initiative offers simple but powerful yogic practices in the prison ecosystem. The objective is to enhance physical, mental & emotional health of Staff and inmates by offering programs for self-transformation. All yogic practices offered through ‘Yogakshema’ have been designed by Sadhguru, Founder-Isha Foundation.
Inmates in 16 prisons will be covered in this initiative which is part of a larger project envisioned by Smt. Malini Krishnamoorthy, IPS, Director General of Police, Prisons & Correctional Services, Karnataka, in a bid to make the prison ecosystem a more humane and transformative space rather than a purely penal center. Equal impetus is being given to the well-being of Officers and Staff too. Yoga and Meditation programs for physical and emotional wellbeing as well as skill development programs are being offered, in 54 prisons across Karnataka, as a part of Karnataka Prison Department’s initiative. In the 1st phase, Isha Foundation is offering its ‘Yogakshema’ program in 10 out of 16 locations covering approximately 1100 people, starting today. The initiative was inaugurated to commemorate the 10th International Day of Yoga, where one-hour sessions will be offered to inmates and staff. The Staff and inmates welcomed the ‘Yogakshema’ initiative with enthusiasm. Sharing their challenges, they said they are looking forward to these sessions which would enable a deeper and more profound experience of life.
‘Yogakshema’ includes Yoga Namaskar, a simple 3-minute process that brings balance and stability to the body and mind. It strengthens the spine, considered in Yoga to be the most significant part of the human anatomy for its ability to enhance one’s sensitivity, perception and experience of life. Other practices include Nadi Shuddhi that cleanses the energy pathways (nadis) in the system to instill a deep sense of peace; Isha Kriya, a powerful process to bring the body and mind to the peak of their capabilities and Simha Kriya, a process specially designed by Sadhguru after the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic; the process increases lung capacity and improves immunity.
Isha Foundation has been offering ‘Inner Freedom for the Imprisoned’ program in prisons & correctional centers across the globe for nearly three decades. Tens of thousands of inmates and staff have testified to life-altering transformation after participating in these programs.
Sadhguru’s vision is to offer “One drop of Spirituality” to every human being on the planet. “At least one drop of spiritual process must exist in every human being, because the possibility of being human cannot be explored when you exist just as a physical entity.” – Sadhguru of Karnataka to offer “Yogakshema”
