Bengaluru, June 19: Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar today received the Guinness World Record certificate awarded to BWSSB for the water conservation pledge campaign.

The DCM received the certificate from Guinness World Records judge Swpnil Dangarikar at an event in a private hotel. The water conservation pledge campaign launched by the BWSSB saw 5.33 lakh people take pledge to save water. The initiative was carried out for a week in the last week of March, 2025.

Giving the acceptance speech, the DCM said, “As many as 5,33,642 people took the pledge to save water in the campaign taken up by the BWSSB. This is a world record feat. We must save water and this initiative goes a long way in achieving it.”

“Delhi has separate connections for drinking water and non-drinking water but Bengaluru has only pipeline. Drinking water is being used for gardening, car washing, etc. As many as 35% of the people are not paying for the water they are using. In spite of that, the BWSSB under the leadership of its Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar is coming up with innovative schemes to provide water for the city,” he said.

“The population of Bengaluru is 1.4 crores and the city’s outskirts has about 50 lakh people. We recently launched water supply scheme for 110 villages around Bengaluru. The water tariff has not been increased in the last ten years and as a result the BWSSB is losing about Rs 400-500 crore per year.

“I have given permission to increase the water tariff after I took over. Tariff increase is an attempt to reduce the losses and make the organisation efficient. In the days to come, we will adopt the same model as the Transport department for water tariff revision,” he announced.

“The employees of the BWSSB are working hard. There were some challenges for Cauvery 5th stage, we have resolved them now. The ‘Sanchari Cauvery’ water scheme provides water in tankers to the citizens of Bengaluru. We also have plans to fill the lakes in Bengaluru with recycled water,” he added.

Raitha Sangha doesn’t have adequate info about Cauvery aarti*

“We have planned the Cauvery aarti and it creates jobs for about 1,500 people in the region. The Raitha Sangha representatives in Mandya doesn’t seem to have proper information on what Cauvery aarti can do for the region. I am planning to hold a meeting with the district in charge minister to clear the doubts about Cauvery aarti,” he said.
