New Delhi, June 25: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, to hold significant discussions on key infrastructure projects for Karnataka especially the construction of an ultra-modern underground road network and the development of the Peripheral Ring Road for Bengaluru city.
On Tuesday morning, Minister Kumaraswamy visited Mr Gadkari’s residence in New Delhi and held extensive consultations on these two major projects, which are crucial for Bengaluru’s future.
Minister Gadkari responded positively to the proposals put forth by Minister Kumaraswamy.
To ease traffic congestion in the city, HD Kumaraswamy stressed the urgent need to implement the Peripheral Ring Road and an advanced underground road network.
Highlighting that Bengaluru is growing rapidly and attracting people from across the country for jobs and livelihoods, HD Kumaraswamy explained how this has led to increasing population density and traffic congestion. He emphasised that the construction of a modern underground road network and Peripheral Ring Road is essential for the city.
These projects, which aim to connect key zones across the city, will serve as permanent solutions to the traffic crisis, especially in the city centre. This transformative infrastructure will play a major role in Bengaluru’s future development and contribute to long-term sustainable urban growth, he explained.
Urgent plea for early completion of Shiradi Ghat Road Project
During the meeting, Minister Kumaraswamy urged the speedy completion of the Shiradi Ghat Road Project, which is vital for smooth connectivity between the state capital Bengaluru and the coastal port city of Mangaluru.
He noted that due to the slow pace of work, vehicle movement between the two cities has been severely affected, causing difficulties for commuters and transporters. He urged for early resolution.
Key highway projects discussed with the Minister:
Upgrade NH-75 (Kunigal section) for improved safety and traffic flow
Develop Channarayapatna to Makutta (State Highway 8) as a new National Highway
Upgrade Jewargi–Shorapur route into a 4-lane highway
Permanent solutions for landslide-prone zones at:
