Detect to prevent cancer
Bengaluru, Feb. 6: Though the Cancer cases are increasing in the world, doctors say that simple preventive steps can help in preventing this deadly disease. Prevention is a very important part of solving the problem of cancer. There are multiple risk factors responsible for cancer origin. By understanding these mechanisms, we will be able to prevent cancer in a large scale
Dr Nanda Rajaneesh, Chairman of Society for Prevention of Cancer said, “There are millions of cancer cells that are formed in our body round the clock. But our body’s immune system takes care of multiple cancer cells by autophagy (making the cells digest itself). This has been highlighted in the recent discovery of Japanese scientist, Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi who has demonstrated how the cells eat themselves. This process plays a key role in preventing cancer and other diseases.”
Hence, people can take up a lot of simple preventive measures like intermittent fasting. “We can prevent cancer by improving the autophagy through our immune system. Nutrition, diet, exercise, yoga, meditation and other components of integrative therapy have helped prevent cancer recurrence and holistically treat cancer patients. Integrative therapy addresses symptom control with non-pharmacological therapies, such that it improves physical and emotional strength in cancer patients. It enables cancer patients to help themselves.
Integrative therapies are backed by scientific evidence; however it’s not an alternative to conventional care. For example, Yoga and meditation can relieve stress and boost immunity by- reducing cortisol (primary stress hormone ) and thereby maintaining balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, normalises hormone levels ,improves circulation and immune cell distribution and recruitment ,and improves apoptotic mechanisms.
Antioxidant diets rich in Vitamin E and C, β-carotene, zinc, iron, copper, selenium can neutralize free radicals that cause oxidative damage and hence also protect the immune system. Moreover, good sleep, maintaining the body’s circadian rhythm, maintaining a happy mood and managing stress also improves one’s immunity to fight off cancer cells”, added Dr Nanda.
The Society for Prevention of Cancer was established with an intention to create awareness about cancer and prevent recurrence of cancer in cancer patients.
