Belagavi, Dec 17: The Legislative Assembly today passed the second amendment to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and Certain Other Law (Amendment) Bill.
The Bill was tabled in the Legislative Assembly by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru Development Minister. Speaking after tabling the Bill, he said, “We had given a deadline of November 30 to pay tax arrears through the One Time Settlement scheme. Rs 1200 crore has been collected through this scheme till now from about 3 lakh properties and tax from 2.26 lakh properties is due.”
“Property tax collections till November 30, 2024, is valued at Rs 4,284 crore. We have already issued an Ordinance regarding this. The second amendment for the year 2024 needs to be passed by the Assembly,” he appealed.
Participating in the discussion, former Minister Ashwathnarayana said, “The Deputy Chief Minister has increased the tax collection for the BBMP and now he has tabled a good amendment. This allows even those who have never paid taxes till now. It is also a good move to bring those who have under-declared their taxes into the tax net. Do not increase the tax burden on the people in the future. Don’t try to run the BBMP just from the property tax collections. Bengaluru contributes 65% of the revenues to the state and there is a need to increase grants for the city.”
