Bengaluru South District’s Permanent Water Solution Coming by Year-End, Says DCM Shivakumar

Bengaluru Express Mandya, May 6: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced today that the permanent drinking water supply project for Bengaluru South district will be completed by December this year.
“We’ve committed Rs 540 crores to this drinking water project. During the Chennapatna by-elections, we promised water supply to all taluks in Bengaluru South district, and we’re determined to fulfill that promise,” Shivakumar told reporters at Belakawadi in Malavalli taluk.
The DCM performed the groundbreaking ceremony near Sattegala reservoir on Monday morning. This project will supply drinking water to Ramanagar, Kanakapura, Chennapatna, and Magadi taluks in Bengaluru South district.
Shivakumar noted that the project was initiated during his previous tenure as Water Resources Minister and explained he visited to investigate delays. “We’re supplying 3.3 TMCft of water at nominal cost,” he stated. He questioned officials and representatives from Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering, the project executors, about the delays.
Regarding land acquisition from farmers, he assured: “Land is being acquired as necessary. The Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to provide fair compensation to cooperative farmers. This project will boost groundwater levels and address the area’s water scarcity issues.”
The project will benefit approximately 10.82 lakh people and 9.03 lakh cattle in a district plagued by rainfall shortages in recent years. About 220 cusecs of water will flow from Sattegala reservoir to Iggalur barrage across the Cauvery River for 180 days using gravity. Of the 25.40 km distance between these points, water will pass through a 4-meter diameter, 12.05 km “D” shaped tunnel, with 11.33 km already completed. From the planned 13.35 km pipeline, 5.5 km has been finished.
Water will be supplied to Mogenahalli tank through lift irrigation and then pumped to fill Kanva, Manchanbele, and Y.G. Gudda reservoirs.
The Deputy Chief Minister reviewed the tunnel work alongside former MP D.K. Suresh, MLAs C.P. Yogeshwar and Kadalur Uday, and MLCs S. Ravi and Sudham Das.
