Bangalore, April 5:
The visitors of Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) will now have a visual treat of striped herbivore.
Zebra Kaveri gave birth to a foal at 3.45 am on March 4th. The striped animal is one of the major attractions in the zoo.
The sex of the foal is not determined yet and it will be under observation by the BBP veterinary team and animal keeper. It has been informed by Dr. Umashankar K S, Assistant Director (Veterinary Services) that the foal is suckling and active. With the addition of the zebra foal, the total number of zebras in the zoo has risen to 5.
K Harish, Deputy Director has mentioned that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure best to the mother and the foal, including a partition within the enclosure to provide privacy and safety, if required.
Zebras have a gestation period of 12 to 13 months and the foal has brown stripes which will eventually become black.
Currently, the new born foal and mother are with the other three Zebras, Bharath, Harishchandra and Kabini and visitors can get a glimpse of the newborn during their visit to the zoo
