Bengaluru, Feb 21: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar today said that it would be great disservice to Bengaluru if planning is not done for good roads, pavements, green zones.
Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on road construction organised by the BBMP, he said, “Bengaluru can’t be changed in 2-3 years. Even God can’t do that. It can be changed only when proper planning is done and executed well.”
“The handbook on roads released here provides guidelines to planting of saplings, erection fo poles, design of main roads, design smaller roads, traffic discipline, design of bus stands, etc. We would like uniformity and standardization in public infrastructure,” he said.
Removal of hanging cables
“We have instructed removal of all cables hanging in the open. Ha e instructed BBMP to lay them underground or cut them,” he said.

“We are also coming out with new policies on protecting assets of the people. It will be announced in the last week of February.”
“We haven’t been able to call for tenders for tunnel projects due to some technical, financial and acquisition issues.
“The Constitution of Ambedkar has moulded our lives. This handbook on roads will determine the future of Bengaluru. We have also received many suggestions such as beautifying metro pillars with cultural symbols. It has already been done at certain places,” he added.
“It is good news that students and youth are coming forward with suggestions. They have volunteered to be part of the effort to shape Bengaluru’s future. Let us collectively take Bengaluru to new heights.
Asked about Kannada disappearing in Bengaluru, he said, “Kannada has not disappeared. I was the one who suggested the 60:40 ratio for Kannada name boards. We will take action if there is any violation to this rule.
Asked about BBMP Chief Engineer’s statement that media was responsible for the sad state of affairs at the BBMP, he said, ” Give me a written complaint, I will take action.”
