Bengaluru, May 26: The Christian community with a population of 40 to 50 lakhs in the state plays a crucial role in assembly and parliamentary elections in electing Congress to power, the Christian community believes.
Presently, the community has expressed its unhappiness for not getting adequate political representation and opportunities.
The Christian community has played a crucial role by supporting the Congress party in the assembly polls. Because of the decisive votes of the Christian community in favour of the Congress party, the Congress came to power.
It may be recalled that Christian community leader A. Bartholomew was an aspirant for Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency from the Congress party and had filed his nomination.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC President, Deputy Chief Minister D.K.Shivakumar persuaded Congress candidate Mansoor Ali Khan and assured Congress candidate A. Bartholomew that he should not stand as a rebel candidate of Congress party, if the votes are divided, there is a possibility that the Congress party will lose. As a compensatory measure he was assured of nomination to the Legislative Council, the community recalled.
With due respect to senior leaders, Bartholomew withdrew his nomination. Further, agreed, he actively campaigned for candidate Mansoor Ali Khan in the Central Lok Sabha constituency.
To keep up the promise, the Congress should elect Bartholomew to the Legislative Council and win hearts of the community, the community demanded.
If the promise is not upheld, there is a high possibility that the Christian community may revolt.
The Christian community has not been given any representation in Lok Sabha in the state, hence they are upset. The community hopes that a proper representation is accorded by electing a Christian to the Legislative Council.
