Hijab tension across the state

Bengaluru, Feb. 17: Tension prevailed at colleges around the state as pre-university students wearing hijab demanded authorities to let them inside classrooms on Thursday. Prohibitory orders were clamped in some areas to prevent any untoward incidents.

A few hijab clad students have been sent back and many protested the decision of college authorities on Thursday.

Home Minister Araga Jnanendra met the Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai at his residence and briefed him the situation in the state. Meanwhile, Muskaan Khan, the student who made into international news by raising ‘Allah hu Akbar’ slogan against protesting students wearing hijab, remained absent from attending PES College in Mandya.

Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar of Ramnagar district issued prohibitory orders and cancelled physical classes in district. The college administration have been asked to take online classes. More than 20 students of Government Women’s PU College in Vijayapura wearing hijab refused to take up exams. The local police have clamped prohibitory orders in 200 meters radius of the college and tight security has been arranged.

Six persons who came in support of hijab wearing students near the Vijaya Para-Medical College have been taken into custody in Belagavi. The individuals gathered in front of the college raised ‘Allah hu Akbar’ slogans and demanded that hijab wearing students must be allowed inside the classrooms. They were taken into custody when they indulged in heated arguments with the police.

Tension prevailed at Shivamogga DVS College when more than 20 hijab wearing students tried to get inside the college. Police and college authorities have sent them back. PUC Chemistry Practical exams scheduled to be held on Thursday has been postponed in Udupi MGM College.
