Bengaluru, Oct. 16:To ensure the holistic improvement of key infrastructure within the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits, Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to identify 100 major roads and prepare a comprehensive development plan for them.
During a review meeting with officials on road, footpath, and cleanliness works, he emphasized that maintaining city roads in good condition is a collective responsibility. He instructed that each of the five city corporations under GBA identify 10 major roads per zone — totaling 100 roads across 10 zones — and accordingly prepare detailed and integrated development plans.
He also directed that the identification process be based on citizen feedback, taking into account aspects such as pothole conditions, footpath quality, bus stop and streetlight maintenance, traffic congestion, water stagnation, and garbage dumping points. The responsibility for comprehensive maintenance will rest with the respective chief engineers.

GBA Approval Mandatory Before Any Road Work:
Pointing out that repeated road damage often occurs due to multiple agencies carrying out works independently, the Chief Commissioner instructed that no department — including the BWSSB or BESCOM — should undertake any work on major roads without obtaining prior approval from the GBA.
Weekly Review Meetings for Monitoring:
To ensure close supervision, weekly review meetings will be held under the chairmanship of the Chief Engineer (Projects). Temporary measures should be taken first, followed by long-term and sustainable actions to address recurring issues at the root level.
Pothole Repairs on Priority:
Potholes on the city’s Outer Ring Road must be repaired on priority. Similar measures should be implemented for arterial, sub-arterial, and ward-level roads to ensure safe and smooth commuting.
Maintenance of White-Topped Roads:
All ongoing white-topping works should be maintained in good condition to facilitate smooth vehicle movement. Contractors responsible for these projects must also ensure their regular upkeep.
Repair of Damaged Drainage Pipes on Flyovers:
Drainage pipes installed along flyovers to divert rainwater have deteriorated in several locations, resulting in water directly falling onto the road and causing damage. Officials have been instructed to inspect and replace the damaged pipes immediately.
Cleanliness Along Outer Ring Roads:
Cleanliness must be maintained along Outer Ring Roads — including roadsides, footpaths, and medians. The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has been directed to coordinate with city corporations to carry out intensive cleaning drives in these stretches.
Chief Engineers, Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, and representatives from B-SMILE and other related departments were present at the meeting.
